Like all the Aspiring Lieutenants of the Naval Engineers, Mario had his first embarkation destination only in August 1943. His first and only ship was the battleship Roma, headquarters of the Command in Chief of the FF.NN.BB., and the his service in the Regia Marina, on board, lasted only a month or so. In fact, on 9 September 1943 he lost his life in the terrible burning of his ship, following it to the bottom of the sea.
